Program Note
In [The Mystery of the Lagoons], Andean Fragments director Atahualpa Lichy travels through outhern villages along the Andes recalling similar childhood experiences with his butterflyhunting father. These lost villages were isolated among mountains until just a few years ago, and despite modern civilization encroaching, traditions are kept alive. The peasants and artisans tell humorous stories, allowing us to recreate the past and learn valuable lessons. They sing their stories for us, accompanied by the typical Andean violin, guitar, or a traditional Venezuelan four-stringed cuatro. The Taitas, the Indians’ ancestors, left records of their past in the Venezuelan Andes and their mark has remained alive in daily life. Even when the general image of the Andean is of a fervently Catholic people, we find ourselves before the presence of the Mohanes, powerful Shamans who still use the secret language to dominate the elements of nature. We travel backwards in time with the guidance of Lichy, following the thread that created the legends, through songs that will reveal the characteristics of Andean culture. (Jay JEON)
