This emotional documentary focuses on the 50-year struggle by two men to prove their innocence after conviction for a crime largely on the basis of prior records and being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The film begins with the middle-aged Shoji and Takao’s release on parole. However, that marks only the beginning of their battle. [Shoji & Takao] shows how the two men persist with the lengthy court battle to vindicate themselves as well as their poignant efforts to rediscover the lives they lost in their teens. On one side, the film details the developments made while Shoji and Takao’s felony murder case is reinvestigated and how the evidence that proves their innocence is found. On the other side, the film shows the men’s efforts to live ordinary lives by getting jobs and going on dates for the first time in their lives . Shoji and Takao’s 20 years of fighting is being told somewhat quietly, but not without great power. (CHO Young-jung)
