Program Note
2011 AND Post-production Support ?10 years ago, I believed it possible to change the world with images. I then met Baek Ja at a protest site. He held the same beliefs. Not with images but with songs though. Armed with the camera and song, we have been here and there for the past 10 years, wishing for a better world. Now thinking: What has been left and changed?’The director’s voice speaks for the rationale behind this work’s filming. Looking closely at a folk musician Baek Ja, it portrays changes of popular movements in South Korean society over the last decade. Although talking about a single-minded individual’s passion, depression, and hope, it also becomes a portrait of the 386 Generation’s dreams of revolution. It appears to reflect public history in a quite personal way, or vice-versa perhaps, sometimes establishing bonds of sympathy, bringing hope, and arousing mirthlessness. The film claims: despite all the changes of how to fight and where to be for the fight?, we’with the song and camera are still here; that is why we exist. (HONG Hyosook)
