A minority group ghettoized during British colonial rule is still trapped within an independent India; all but forgotten in a world that had changed, still making a living by stealing. Now, society is in flux, but a rigid prejudice still treats them as thieves. They are persecuted by police and beaten for no reason. To escape discrimination and a history of thievery, they chose theater. Through drama they release their pent-up anger and give voice to their stories of injustice. But what they gain from it is communication and reconciliation with a world severed from them. Please Don’t Beat Me, Sir! follows the efforts of young men who try to live a new life through the theater. It communicates with the past by looking back to the village to ascertain the reason for the discrimination, which dominates at the moment.
