The film begins with a one-night stand between a man and a woman who meet in a club. Upon waking up in the middle of the night at the man’s place, the two begin to talk and gradually get to know each other, but they part after moments of awkwardness. Clara, an elementary school teacher from Quebec, and Nikolai, an artist from Ukraine, start to learn about each other’s inner thoughts as they share stories of their past and their wounds. Soon, their encounter evolves into being more than just a night of sex. [Nuit #1] may seem like a typical story about how a man meets a woman one night but the film’s rather typical story is transcended by the actors’ compelling performances. Everyone has a wounded past, has dreams for the future, and has the present moment to hold on to. Although they met by chance, their conversation after sex develops into a discussion on the easons for humans to live and exist. From the moment they make love on the couch in the middle of the night to when they hug each other outside the man’s place; and from when Clara passionately dances in the club to when she smiles at her students, the film rattles our emotions and stirs up the silence in the middle of the night.
