Does eternal love exist? What is true love? M. L. Bhandevanov Devakula’s Eternity poses fundamental questions about love. This film is an adaptation of a short story by renowned Thai author Malai Chupinit. Devakula’s film is the fourth incarnation of this story. Set in northern Thailand, in Khao Kradan of the 1930s, Pabho, a wealthy Burmese man, marries Yupadee, a young divorcee. Yupadee falls in love at first sight with Sangmong, the nephew that was living in Pabho’s home for a while, and they begin an affair. Phabo is outraged and binds them with a chain, ordering them to live together forever. Yupadee and Sangmong are initially happy because they can now stay together without interference from anybody. But this happiness does not last long; as time passes, their relationship sours. Stories about adultery are commonplace, but that forms only the prologue here. Although this story is mainly about Pabho avenging himself by shackling the adulterers together, the main theme of [Eternity] is the doubts surrounding the illusion called love. (KIM Ji-seok)
