Program Note
Marina, who lives in a small Mexican village, is a curious little girl who loves singing. One day, her village holds a festival, where Marina and her cousins meet a boy who became a stone on a circus troupe’s carriage. In order to revive the boy before his heart completely stops, Marina and her cousins set out on a fantastic journey around the country of senses. The vivid colors and mysterious living creatures create pleasant scenes in this animated film with amusing and cheerful melodies. Having become a stone after losing all his senses because of anger at the world and life, the boy regains all five senses by traveling the country of noses, ears, hands, mouths, and eyes. The adorable characters representing the five sensory organs stimulate viewers’ imaginations, and the process of tackling new challenges as the story advances is curiously riveting and tense. It is also interesting to see how girls are described as pro-active and enthusiastic, while boys are painted as indecisive and somewhat less adventurous. This film can cheer up both young and old, with a flow of bright, dynamic energy to make them appreciate their own lives. (KIM Eunah)
