Program Note
After a breakup with his girlfriend, Leo returns to Juragua, Cuba, where his family lives. Leo’s father Rafael is divorced, grandfather Otto is a grumpy old man, and Leo is feeling low. three generations live together in a small, old apartment and they clash with each other on every single thing. And to this, Rafael’s girlfriend Marta comes, intensifying the tension between three men. The Project of the Century by Carlos Quintela is as ambitious as its title. The film unspools a story of pathetic, everyday lives and relationships across generations and parallels the socio-political history of Juragua. Images of battered bulidings and abandoned factories show the aridity of Juragua, and old propaganda clips, which promised bright future, highlighting the abandoned nuclear power plant supported by the Soviet Union in the ’80s, go side by side with the three men’s routine. The film speculates about sharp geopolitical topics of the 20th century: individual and state, media and ideology, and memories and existence. (Jin PARK)
