Program Note
Watching and writing. The camera and the pen. These are normally male-dominated areas. [Zoom Hunting], however, puts both into the hands of women-two sisters. The film begins with photographer Ruyi telling her elder sister and novelist Ruxing about what she captured on her camera quite by accident: a couple making love. Ruyi develops a voyeuristic interest and Ruxing writes a novel based on what Ruyi tells her about the couple. Then comes a shocking revelation from which the film evolves into a mystery that leads to the conflict between artistic creativeness and ethics.
After combining Michelangelo Antonioni’s [Blow-Up] and Alfred Hitchcock’s [Rear Window] to form the basic narrative, the film added elements of trust, betrayal and revenge between lovers to complete the story. What makes this film distinct from the works of Antonioni and Hitchcock is that it takes the basic narrative even further. The film re-interprets the typical yet artistic acts of watching (camera), listening (voice recorder) and writing (novel) from the women’s perspectives. (KANG Sowon)
