Azam who left the village returns home. He spends the night talking with his childhood friend Ali and his wife Minah at the island. And for fun, Azam dives under the water and disappears into the sea. Year without a Summer is composed with two parts: the present that portrays the reunion of Azam and Ali and the past that describes Azam’s departure of the village. These two stories are separated from and linked to each other all at the same time. Woven with the myth of a fisherman who discovered the magic sand and flourished stories of the past, the present becomes mystical and surreal with the set of black night. Covered with poverty and violence, however, the past is presented in harshly realistic way. The link between two stories is the friendship between Azam and Ali; Azam who comes and goes like a mirage and Ali who constantly waits his friend. The relationship between the two predicts the recurrence of the story that echoes with the fisherman’s story of waiting and longing. (CHO Young-jung)
