Shama Town is the fount of this story. It is a place where a Chinese Robin Hood makes a name and the hideout for a guerilla group called a bandit. The people of Shama Town earn their living by performing the heroic saga of the leader of the bandit. They try developing a tourist trade, exposing relics of the town through broadcasting. The result is a competition erupting between archaeologists and villagers, the former no less greedy at the prospect of treasure than the latter in the vision of development. Archaeologists hire villagers to dig up historical remains and try to carry away the treasure secretly, only to come into conflict with their employees. Beneath the story’s treasure-hunting entertainment factor, [Welcome to Shama Town] implicates the development boom and the horror beyond it in modern China.
