As one of Japan’s most popular comedians, poking fun at life’s daily trivialities, Yuichi Kimura also demanded attention as a director with his directorial debut film, Counterfeit, based on a real counterfeiting incident from the 1940s. While working in a variety of fields as a writer, chef and actor, he looks like a multi-talented figure, but in fact his various activities are derived from one common thing: a brilliant viewpoint. Audiences have come to expect that his films will be one-of-a-kind, like something by Matsumoto Hitoshi. But expectation is often out of balance, because Yuichi Kimura makes serious films with a delicate, subtle view of world. His latest film tells a story of an ordinary family by portraying only the memory of the family. Living alone in Tokyo, Shuichi is about to move out to marry Mary. His parents are also moving into a new home. With the intention of helping his parents with their move, Shuichi finds the house vacant, and comes to follow the memories of childhood while locating a key. (Shion YANG)
