Program Note
Rohan, a 17-year-old boy dreaming of becoming a writer, is in a boarding school. One day he sneaks out to see a movie, which gets him expelled. Waiting for him at home is the father who has never tried to see him in 8 years and a 6-year-old sibling. The authoritative father forces Rohan into factory labor and giving up the dream of writing. Rohan floats among the cold and oppressive father, the brother whose existence he has never known, hard labor and his seemingly lost dream.
Vikramaditya Motwane weaves a coming-of-age tale as his feature debut. The story of a youth struggling to achieve his dream and overcome the oppressive patriarch, typical though it may seem, differentiates itself from other boy-to-man films with Motwane’s unique lyricism and vivid direction.
