Program Note
After her death, mother left Ray with a house, troubled siblings, a granny who cannot speak English and a cat. After moved in with his family, Ray is dying to know why his Japanese Granny sighs every time she uses toilet. In addition, he is not sure if she is a real granny. Ray’s problems are stacking up. From the first scene of the film, Ray seems the most normal person in the family. But soon it seems clear that his normality is only superficial. With his obsession for Robot figures and tidiness, and his friendless and loveless life, Ray becomes the most abnormal member of the family. Being obsessed with normalcy of family, Ray wants to reveal the secret of Granny’s sigh and verify her blood tie to the family. Toilet is a simple film that questions what the normal family is made of. The film tells the simple truth about family with unique characterization and refreshing sense of humor. (CHO Young-jung)
