Program Note
18-year-old En is thrown into confusion while grappling with his first love with the girl next door, the sudden death of his grandfather, his Alzheimer’s-suffering grandmother and his mom’s new boyfriend. En also happens to know that his father, who died of cancer a few years ago, used to be a student activist. He vaguely feels the pain and suffering of his parents’ generation. He tracks the life of his father and encounters the most tragic moment in Singapore’s modern history. Director Boo Junfeng vividly depicts the turbulent political landscape in the mid-20th century Singapore using documentary and photographs in the film but he never takes a hostile view, even when dealing with the heavy issues. The film is rather serene and poetic, with a boy connecting personal and national history. The director suggests that it is important to remember those who sacrificed their lives to keep what they valued, and where the freedom and prosperity now enjoyed by the younger generation of Singapore came from. Boo Junfeng proved his directing talent in this debut film. (KANG Sowon)
