Program Note
[Reign of Assassins] is loaded with the beauty of technically designed wirework and is brimming with a surrealistic atmosphere. Also, the idea of adapting action blockbuster [Mr. and Mrs. Smith] as a Ming Dynasty-set martial arts epic is interesting. While the pure sentimentalism of a scene describing the romance between the protagonists in the middle of the film could be just acceptable, the charms of Jung Woo-sung and Michelle Yeoh, playing assassins with murderous missions and lovers trying to protect the one they love, are dazzling. In the film, Jung Woo-sung proves that his physically superior condition complements his role and Michelle Yeoh still looks young like a girl and maintains the power in her movement. Though taking a traditional theme of classic martial art films-the righteous spirit for chivalry-the film adds an element of romanticism so that it might be considered as one of the best films in either actor’s career.
