Program Note
A company executive Hajime returns his hometown after learning his mother’s sudden collapse. Moreover, his friend who works at the factory he shut down short time ago suddenly dies of accident. Hajime looks back his life and decides to become a train operator, his childhood dream job.
Railways is a typical story about a middle age crisis. Leaving busy, fast and cold city and arriving slow and warm small town, the typicality of the story is reinforced. However, when he chooses his dream job, it takes a new railway. Just any other job, his job, train operator has strict rule and professional ethics. He has to endure the same pain as he had in his previous job in the city. Yet his sense of happiness by doing what he wants to do becomes contagious. His happiness changes the life of people surround him, his ill mother, wife, daughter and even the young colleague who chose the job only to earn his bread. The typical story indeed yet brings out the peaceful and refreshing feeling. (CHO Young-jung)
