Program Note
The 15th PIFF invites films by Japanese directors who have special bonds with Pusan, and one of the most anticipated of such films is [Outrage] by director Kitano Takeshi. This movie is his 15th film as director and symbolizes his successful return to his unique action genre that portrays outrageous violence. His return to his roots has taken seven years or so-the last were [Zatoichi] in 2003 and [Brother] in 2001; it has been that long since director Kitano Takeshi/actor “Beat” Takeshi showed off his talent in presenting violence. As the title of the film suggests, the characters are all evil-minded. In drawing up the plot, the director first decided how to kill the characters and then added narrative accordingly. This all-evil makeup of the film, combined with brutal scenes of violence, seems to convey the message that only evil can beat evil in a power struggle among Yakuza gang members who engage in cold-blooded transactions and betrayals. This film offers a long awaited, adrenaline-pumping catharsis for men! (Shion YANG)
