Program Note
A unique road movie made in the first-person perspective, [Mandoo] tells a story of Sheelan, an Iraqi doctor and defector to Sweden who returns to Iraq 20 years after she fled the tyranny of Saddam Hussein. Her plan to take Sharif, her disabled uncle from stroke, to Sweden is thwarted. Instead, the uncle and his family decide to return to their old home in Iran, and Sheelan joins their hazardous journey. The camera follows Sharif’s point of view from the car. Director Ebrahim Saeidi’s delicate camerawork effectively records Sharif’s love for his family and the strong will to protect them. Through the life-and-death incidents encountered on the trip, the family reaffirms their love and awakens the dogged fortitude to overcome challenges. Their long journey also epitomizes the plight of state-less Kurds. (KIM Ji-seok)
