Program Note
The film is the latest work by Pang Ho-cheung, one of the most active directors in the contemporary Hong Kong film industry. As Hong Kong started banning smoking, even outside buildings, in 2007, smokers were forced into the backstreets of the city. And in 2009, smokers found camaraderie of sorts, trading news and rumors-and some fell in love. The film is a romantic comedy revolving around the relationship between advertising agency executive Jimmy and cosmetics salesperson Cherie. Their love story spans one week and plays out at a rapid pace through handheld shooting accompanied by a sweet soundtrack. Faux documentary-style interviews on “when love falls apart” are also inserted in between the narrative sequences. But the film is not about broken hearts. It is about how two people fall in love with each other. The director depicts, in an entertaining and heartwarming way, how love can blossom in a metropolis where human networks are built on Facebook, Twitter or text messages. (KANG Sowon)
