[Kites] drew and all-time record number opening day audience for a Bollywood film, and it well represents the trend of contemporary Indian cinema. Featuring an Indian immigrant and shot in Las Vegas, the hit film has both elements of traditional romance and action that can appeal to global audiences along with Bollywood-style dance sequences. The main character is, a carefree fraud who makes living conning wealthy women into marriage. His life takes a sudden turn when he encounters the fiancee of a Las Vegas casino mogul. They fall in love with each other and a violent cat-and-mouse game begins. The film features fast cutting, exotic backgrounds, spectacle, tragic romance, various cultures and languages and at times turns into music video. In the film, director Anurag Basu attempted to transcend cultural boundaries between India and the United Sates, blur class divisions, and combine features of American and Indian films, which give the movie a diasporic voice. Now, Bollywood films seem to be going through fast acculturation. (KANG Sowon)
