Another road movie from Kobayashi Masahiro, this time depicting the journey of a grandfather and his granddaughter as they search for the meaning of family. Set in a small fishing village in Hokkaido, the granddaughter, Haru, makes up her mind to look for another job in a city after having lost her position as a school nutritionist. What matters to her though is her sick grandfather, Tadao. Filled with anger at her leaving him behind, he sets off on a journey to find siblings likely to look after him. Haru hastily follows after him. All that waits for Tadao is the good for nothing reality, however. Having found himself in the middle of nowhere with no one to look after him, he heads for his remarried son-in-law, Shinichi-Haru’s father. Through talks with Shinichi, Haru confesses her secrets. In fact, Haru, Tadao, and Shinichi already have a mutual understanding as to why they’ve had to live apart; they simply haven’t had a chance to express it. Now, the gathering gives them the opportunity to reaffirm their trust and love. Already a grown-up, Haru becomes more mature through the journey. She learns the meaning of family, deciding to look after Tadao to the end. (KIM Ji-seok)
