[Gesher] tells a story of three men of modest means who refuse to stop dreaming. Impoverished day workers in the affluent Southern Iranian city of Oslouyeh, Ghobad, Jahan, and Nezam call an abandoned oil pipe their home. The belittling reality contrasts with the glitter of towering oil plants. Their humble dreams sustain the three men through a difficult life; love for their families back in their hometown, the serenity of sea, and daydreaming of better future. The three men communicate through the shared silence and mutual understanding of life’s hardships that strengthen that solidarity. Director Vahid Vakilifar avoids dramatic portraiture of their lives but instead presents them as they are. He tells us the purpose of their forgotten lives within the maze of industrialized society. [Gesher] answers an age-old philosophical conundrum by delivering an unexaggerated yet punctuated message of where the real roots of happiness are buried. (KIM Ji-seok)
