Program Note
[Donor] is a realistic portrayal of the life of a strong, ambitious woman who is nonetheless unable to escape the harsh reality of poverty.
Lizette makes a living by selling DVD bootlegs on the streets of Manila. Because of authorities making it harder for her to continue her illegal business and a lazy boyfriend, Danny, she is forced to find a new way of earning a living. She decides to make enough money to move to Dubai and sell one of her kidneys to a rich Arab on the black market. But after all the arrangements are finalized, Lizette finds out that she is pregnant. Her final choice is to have an illegal abortion.
Director Mark Meily paints a very realistic picture of all the stages Lizette goes through-from having a sham wedding in order to go through the kidney transplant, to the actual transplant procedures. It’s a cruel reality. Still, Lizette views her hard luck as natural. The film makes a strong impression starting with the scene where Lizette visits her mother’s grave and ending with the lives of her unborn baby and Danny fading away. (KIM Ji-seok)
