Program Note
In the late 1950s, people considered right wing sent to the labor camp in the middle of Gobi desert. Harsh labor, unbearable weather and the horrible shortage of the food push the people disappeared into the sandy ditch of the night. The Ditch is the first feature film of a documentary filmmaker Wang Bing. He calmly observes the life of people who is pushed into the extreme condition. Under the desolate immense desert, there lies the ditches, the people’s home and at the same time, grave. In there, they look for the warmth of others and all the same face the death. In this barren desert, the political conviction pales its value. Reacting to a bowl of noodle with all over their bodies, they flounder for the survival. At the point of giving up all humanity, Wang Bing inserts a drama. The cry of a wife who faces her husband’s dead body imbues the power of human emotion into the suffocatingly empty space.
