Program Note
[Clerk] is the story of an urban guy that lives two lives-that of the day and that of the night. Biplab is a typist working for an ordinary company. But every night in his room, he falls into the fantasy world, talking to renowned Bollywood actresses on the phone. He tells them about constantly new stories: his version of ‘The Thousand and One Nights.’ Biplab’s two lives exist in stark contrast to each other. The company he works for is on the verge of closing, but he is indifferent to the union’s resistance. He is an introverted, inactive worker, taking care only of tasks assigned to him. Conversely, he metamorphoses into an active and bold man in his surrealistic world. The transformation paradoxically stresses his loneliness, and the alienation of city dwellers to a larger extent. The last scene, in which Biplab and his female neighbor sell fish on the street, is another fantasy. Yet, unlike the others taking place in his room, the fantasy set outside the room throws multiple meanings at audiences. Their fantasy world is still uneasy just like fish outside a fishbowl.
