To see a movie a boy borrows the money from an old man, the town’s undertaker. For this repayment, the boy shows him the scene of a neighbor girl taking a shower through a hole in his room. The simple desires of the boy and the old man bring out the tragedy all over the town. Mixed with the beautiful cinematography and tragic narrative, A Beautiful Mistake is an elegy for cinema. The film is filled with various signifiers of “seeing.” From the colored glass inscribed with Mao, a kaleidoscope given by a neighbor girl, the voyeuristic peeping through the hole to the actual watching film, the whole film is embroidered with desire of seeing. Then, there come beautiful identical twins that complete the perfect cinematic illusion. Yet, the act of seeing in the film is always accompanied with cruel tragedy. As the twins’ fate that shares one soul with two bodies has been a ‘beautiful mistake,’ it questions that the act of seeing or the cinema itself might be a ‘beautiful mistake.’ (CHO Young-jung)
