Program Note
In general, Buddhism preaches that the road to ultimate truth can be accessed by eradicating the roots of desire. But what if that road can also be reached by realizing one’s own desire? Abraxas takes the latter position. Zonen is a married Buddhist monk who has a wife and a child now—but was a rock singer who tried to commit suicide in the past. With Zonen seeming unstable, almost as if something were chasing him, the chief priest suggests a concert to cheer him up. However, Zonen decides to hold the concert near his temple, not in a big city. The concert means many things to Zonen: It is a memorial performance for his friend who passed away as well as his road to ultimate truth. However, people around him start worrying about it. Abraxas is a sacred word that encompasses all the bipolar elements such as truth and falsity, light and dark. Director Kato Naoki tells that the secular and the sacred are the same, even though Zonen realizes his desire for music in a secular world. (KIM Ji-seok)
