Program Note
[Aurora] is Cristi Puiu’s dedication to one of his most praised master directors, Eric Rohmer. It is one six stories on Bucharest. The six films deal with middle class Romanian citizens living in the capital city on the European frontier. If his debut film, [The Death of Mr. Lazarescu], was about ambulances, [Aurora] is a story on public domain. The film follows the ruin of an average man. Viorel, the father of two daughters, wanders around Bucharest. The film follows the main character’s every move during his two days of roaming. Cristi Puiu’s capturing the fall of an average man dominated by feelings of anxiety and restlessness proved the ‘Un Certain Regard’ award at Cannes with [The Death of Mr. Lazarescu] was not the result of luck.
