Program Note
Sofia, a middle-aged professor, is overwhelmed with sorrow after hearing the news that the body of an infant was found in a landfill. As her sorrow grows, she asks the morgue and the police to help her prepare a proper burial for the dead baby. However, they just think that she is out of her mind. As their unwillingness to help makes it difficult for Sofia to accomplish her mission, she decides to adopt the child, naming her Aurora, much to the bafflement of those around her, including her husband.
Aurora, which is based on a true story, deals with a very special type of mourning. Sofia’s mourning for Aurora isn’t for someone she personally knows, and such mourning is comparable to obsession. Nevertheless, as her mourning, which can only be explained by altruistic compassion, is denied because it doesn’t have any legal standing we finally sympathize with her. The film makes us ask ourselves this question: Does the existing legal system take society’s losses and mourning seriously? (Jin PARK)
