Ophthalmologist Adi, in his early forties, has a wound from the past that he didn’t experience firsthand. His brother, whom he has never seen, was killed in the massacre during the Indonesian military regime. Adi reconstructs the past of 50 years ago from other people’s memories and images and the film juxtaposes them with the current images of the massacre perpetrators. The perpetrators also show the site of massacre indifferently and re-enact the memories of violence. Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Look of Silence is his second documentary, following The Act of Killing(2012), which shocked the world. In his previous work, he controversially highlighted matter of reenactment as a method of mediating the past and the present in reconstructing memory. In The Look of Silence, he adopted a rather simpler structure of presenting perpetrator and victim. However, the fear and energy it creates is just as strong as his previous film.
