Program Note
Inspired by Franz Kafka’s unfinished short story, this film depicts a man who moves into an apartment he has made into a fortress. The original story has an animal as its main character, but this film features a middle-aged man. The camera focuses on the man who is obsessed with safety and quiet after moving in, never enjoying the comfort of his new home. The film terrifyingly depicts how the “outsiders,” who are represented by the homeless, encroach on his private space slowly but o obviously. The space plays an important part in this film, emphasizing the feeling of instability with its threatening angles and diagonal structure. The story also points out the desolation of modern society by showing a red building, dehumanized survivors and the poor in the dark basement. As the building becomes more desolate, the character himself gradually comes to look similar to the building, and it is frightening to look at such a change. The composition of scenes and visual effects make it hard to believe that the film was directed by a rookie. (RHEE Soue-won)
