Program Note
Israeli artist, Michal’s bed frame breaks and she wakes up by bumping her head on the floor. The injury might have caused Michal to be unable to remember her TV interview or the talk with her estranged husband. Meanwhile, Palestinian Nadine, working at an Israeli DIY furniture factory across the border, is found stealing screws for a bed and gets fired. The two unacquainted women meet at a border conflict, and due to a twist of destiny, the two women’s identities are reversed, allowing Michal and Nadine to experience each other’s lives. Self Made is the second feature of Shira Geffen, presented her debut feature Jellyfish(2007) at BIFF in 2007. In a unique atmosphere where the real and surreal are mixed, the film closely examines daily lives of two women at the border of Israel and Palestine through multi-layered feminist perspective. The unrestricted surreal scenes shed a light on the other side of female subjectivity beyond identities endowed by religion, ethnicity and nationality. Like her previous film, the director again attempts to approach reality through the surreal and dreams. (Jin PARK)
