Program Note
Summer 1944. Warsaw, Poland, is occupied by the Nazis. After the death of his father, Stefan works at a chocolate factory to support his mother and brother. Humiliated by the Nazis every day, Stefan wants to join the anti-Nazi resistance but he can’t because he promised her mother not to engage in any military activity. At last, he plans a revolt with his friends, while also falling in love with a girl. This film is based on an actual revolt that happened on August 1, 1944 in occupied Warsaw. The revolt led to the complete destruction of the Polish capital. Against this backdrop, the young men and women in their 20s tell their stories of youth and love. Its first 30 minutes is filled with hope and assion that stands in stark contrast to the latter part, a moving and affecting depiction of the misery of the revolt. The film insists love and trust survive even in endless despair. Its lyrical tunes delicately harmonize with the scenes of the revolt. (RHEE Soue-won)
