Program Note
An experimental film that combines the director’s personal life and today’s symptoms of anxiety and fear, Collapse uses that keyword to continually question and rationalize what it means. It is hard to draw a line on the scope of collapse in this film, which deals with the physical collapse of buildings as well as with individual and national crises. The images and sounds recorded over a long period of time create simultaneously a personal document and a public record of Korean society. Collapse begins by asking the audience to look critically at a certain experience. Then the director ruminates on his own experience, asking questions and answering them. The numbered narrations and images allow the audience to continually look back and rationalize. By the end of the film, the director’s ceaseless introspection opens another method of reflecting on today’s society. (KONG Youngmin)
