Javier, a doctor, goes to Bogota on business and meets Angie, a beautiful and vivacious salsa dancer. Back in Barcelona, Javier can’t forget her, so he decides to move to Bogota, and visits the city again to see her. However, it is not easy for him to start a romance with Angie because she is struggling to survive as a single mom with a brutish ex-husband. Angie likes Javier but as she prepares for the Delirio contest she can’t think of romance. Their cultural gap, commensurate with the geographical distance between the cities, also gets in the way of their relationship. Ciudad Delirio, which opened this year’s Cartagena International Film Festival, is a Latin romantic comedy with which the Asian audience isn’t familiar yet. Nevertheless, it is also filled with familiar elements of romantic stories: the platonic romance between a pure-hearted man and strong-willed woman, ensemble characters full of humor as well as cheerful music and dance. The scenes from Delirio, Colombia’s favorite dance performance, lets us feel the South American rhythm and energy. (Jin PARK)
