Program Note
The youngest of an organized crime family, Luigi is a hotheaded international drug dealer whose second brother, Rocco, looks like a middle class businessman from Milan. One day, a mistake made by the son of the eldest brother, now a farmer in Calabria, sets off a clash between different mob families. Through the three brothers, the film illustrates the demise one of Italy’s three major criminal organizations: Milan and Calabria’s Ndrangheta. Uncompromisingly nervous direction marked by spectacle-free tension creates a desolate and cold mood throughout the film. A narrative pleasure that explains how Italian organized crime works and excellent visual aesthetics as displayed in the drug trafficking scene complement the film’s tone, a totally new tone for a mafia film. Black Souls premiered at the Venice Film Festival in competition and is the third feature by one of Italy’s most promising filmmakers, Francesco MUNZI, whose first and second films each went to Venice and Cannes.
