Program Note
Nira is a kindergarten teacher who discovers that her young pupil Yoav has a remarkable gift for poetry. Although, at first she hopes to encourage the young boy and nurture his talent, at the same time, Nira starts to share Yoav’s spontaneous verses with those around her as if they are her own. When Yoav’s father finds out about Nira’s covert agenda he angrily warns her to stay away from his son, but Nira’s obsession with Yoav eventually leads her to kidnap him. The Kindergarten Teacher is the second feature from Israeli director Nadav Lapid, whose previous work Policeman(2011) was an international success. The film poses an interesting question about creative desires and artistic experiences. What kind of mind creates art? What does it mean to experience the creative process fully? Nira embodies the gap between the ability to experience beauty and the desire to create even from stealing someone else’s words. Nira invokes a bond of sympathy within us, living in an age where pure art can hardly find its space. (Jin PARK)
