Program Note
Mr. Kaplan is an grumpy Jewish man in his 70s living in Uruguay. During World War II, he escaped from the Nazis and moved to South America. He isn’t happy about his family’s disinterest in his past. One day, Kaplan becomes convinced that a German neighbor is a Nazi war criminal. Aided by former police officer Contreras, Kaplan launches an operation almost like the historic arrest of Adolf Eichmann, leaving Kaplan’s family worried about his obsession and his health. Mr. Kaplan is the second feature by Alvaro Brechner, who came to Busan in 2009 with his debut feature Bad Day to Go Fishing(2009). The film humorously depicts an old man trying to regain his vigor by confronting his trauma. It also elaborates on generational differences and their views of the past, the immense influence of ideology and politics on an individual and the resilience of human dignity. When the film reaches its climax by revealing true identity of the neighbor, it tells us that every life is filled with scars, regrets and new beginnings. (Jin PARK)
