Program Note
Two brothers with totally opposing personalities-one a cynic, the other a diplomat-have made a routine of sharing monthly dinners together at a high-class restaurant. The usual conversations about their lives become extremely challenged when a surveillance camera tape with shocking material surfaces. What is the best response to someone who has inadvertently committed murder? Set against the violent society of modern Italy where the weight of life has become less significant, this is the central question The Dinner poses. The predicament the older lawyer brother and the younger pediatrician brother are placed in clearly displays how different the answer can be when this question is addressed to a third party, and when it is directed to someone who’s son or daughter is directly involved in foul play. It is a universal issue that any parent, brother and sister can relate to. The excellent cast of veteran actors is superb in this film, which ultimately suggests rather pessimistic prospects that question whether justice can be found in modern society. (RHEE Soue-won)
