Program Note
Set in a charming fairy tale village, this film chronicles events surrounding three couples from spring to the next autumn. It also speaks like the dying words of the now deceased master director Alain Resnais, the last page in his cycle of new films that began with Melo(1986). It well represents his second life as a filmmaker, completely different from his early career of films such as Night and Fog(1955) and Hiroshima, My Love(1959), which gave him the title, “the most political French director.” In this film, mysterious George who causes havoc in the lives of the three couple is supposed to be dying, but has more energy than anyone. He brings the audience to self-examination without ever showing himself in the film, making it easy to guess that he is the director himself. Hence the film is full of questions about true youth and the free spirit. This energetic celebration of life received the Alfred Bauer Prize in Berlin, which is awarded to the most original director. It won’t disappoint the cinephile in you. (RHEE Soue-won)
