Program Note
After a stint in prison, Eddy stays with a friend, Osman, to look after his seven-year-old daughter. Osman’s wife needs an operation but the couple doesn’t have the money. One day, Charlie Chaplin dies, and the two friends decide to steal his coffin for some quick cash. Set in a small Swiss village near Lake Leman in 1977, this black comedy tells the tale of an off-the-wall duo trying to get some money by snatching the body of the late cinema master. The stars’ mature performances strengthen this story self-reflective of cinema. Roschdy Zem, who was awarded best actor at the Cannes Film Festival, stands out with his seriousness, and Benoit Poelvoorde interprets the role of a man characterized by clumsiness with tenderness and humor. Peter Coyote, a New Yorker known best for ET(1982) and Bitter Moon(1992), plays the supporting role of Chaplin’s wiry butler. Chaplin’s actual granddaughter, Dolores Chaplin. and Chiara Mastroianni also appear. Xavier Beauvois follow-up to Of Gods and Men(2010). (RHEE Soue-won)
