Program Note
Like Romania’s defining Nicolae Ceausescu years and Ireland’s Troubles, Poland’s Solidarity movement has cast a lasting shadow on the country and had an indelible impact. Set during the early 1980s when Solidarity was still simply a divisive issue and not yet a real political threat, [All that I Love] follows four friends in their quest to form a punk band. As workers protests sweep across the country, Janek and Staszek, the sons of a navy man, the rebellious Kazik, and the affluent Diabel gel as a band, but their disparate lives are touched by social turmoil and outside perceptions. Director Jacek Borcuch explores how politics clashes with private life, how easily it can divide friends and family, and how it can corrupt young love as the story culminates with the establishment of Martial Law. The band’s ultimate success comes with a stiff price and closure simply raises more questions.
