Program Note
In South Sudan, nature remains pristine. From the airplane up in the sky, the sceneries viewed through the camera seem wonderfully peaceful. Yet, this seemingly calm place has been kept busy by ‘friends’ from abroad, such as European colonizers, Americans troops and a Chinese oil company. On top of this, the South Sudan government upholding the spirit of the conservative regime eagerly joins the neocolonial forces. Meanwhile, a number of religious leaders seek to spread Christian values around the country using the need for ‘improvement’ as their pretext. Hubert Sauper, highly acclaimed for his previous work, Darwin′s Nightmare(2004), returns with We Come as Friends, yet another 21st century odyssey tracing the state of neocolonialism prevalent in the Third World. The ‘friends’ from the First World conspire with local powers to maintain their global exploitation system, outwardly stressing such values as support, modernization, and democratization. When those claiming to be ‘friends’ reveal their violent intention of bringing about neocolonial oppression, we come to realize that this is not just the story of our neighbors in a faraway land.
