After her divorce, Maria lives alone but strongly as a teacher at a night school. She meets a new boyfriend when she goes to a movie and has a sweet time together. When she gets unexpectedly pregnant, she breaks up with him after much thought. The child is born prematurely, and she is in distress while standing in front of the incubator room. The film portrays “lo spazio bianco (the white space)” of life which a divorced woman faces when she becomes unexpectedly pregnant. The process of the main character to find a solution of the problematic situation, which is imaginable by all women, will touch the hearts of audiences. This new film by Francesca Comencini is an excellent work depicting the delicate expression of the psychological status of all the characters.
