Program Note
Without Cristian Mungiu of [4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days], this legendary omnibus film hasn’t come out into the world. Five directors including Mungiu dramatize their unique personal experiences from the end part of the Ceausescu administration with a view from ordinary people. As the title implies, the retrospective sense of humor pervades the entire film and the episodes being delivered with the sense of humor are sometimes comic, strange, surprising, and surreal. So, if you expect a bitterly keen realistic approach like [4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days], this will be a little frustrating like was for audiences at Cannes this year. But if we remember the fact that the primary virtue of Romanians who endured the repressive period as with a sense of humor, the frustration will be easily excused. Or, I presume that this film might be a typical trend within Romanian film.
