In the dark night of Mali, with the sound of Kora, the traditional musical instrument of Mali, the legend of “Fantan Fanga (The Power of the Poor)” begins. Prior to the presidential election, an albino is found decapitated. Fafa, who is also an albino and the leader of a theatrical company, reports the crime to the police. Doussou, who is put in charge, starts the investigation, but they rely on the power of “tradition” to find the head when they face difficulties. By using the narrative form, the film criticizes the reality of African politics, where savage practices are carried out based on superstitions. In the process of revealing truth by collaborating the modern and the tradition, the director’s will to fuse the tradition and the modern to overcome the dark reality of Africa is vividly expressed. The line which reads “the power of the poor comes from their life-forces” reminds us of the fairness of God.
