Program Note
Becoming successful doesn’t require a good rearing environment. The thirteen-year-old boy in this film is proof of just that. Although the boy grew up in an environment where his father behaved like a dog and lived in his grandmother’s house with uncles, he became a bestselling writer. Based on a bestselling semi-autobiography, this tumultuous, delightful film about growing up in Belgium is the opposite of the Brazilian film [The Famous and the dead]. The world of adults is corrupt, but the corruptive world appears not to be disgusting because it can be another expression of freedom. Riding a bicycle naked is a good example. This film reminds Mitt Liv Som Hund of Lars Hallstrom. Much more rough, but its impact and impression is relatively dazzling and this represents a good example of the coming of age story.
