Program Note
“The film is not about casualties of war really. It′s about the people left behind to deal with life after casualties of war have gone. [The Messenger] may say a thing or two about war, but I think it ultimately deals with grief and the desire to live, to let life into the darkness, even to laugh.” ? Oren Moverman
In [The Messenger], Israeli-born director Oren Moverman turns his camera on the aftermath of war on the home front. Contrary to being another film simply about the devastating effects of combat, the film uses humor and universal emotion to tell the story of two Casualty Notification Officers and a war widow, and how each finds the strength to move on with their lives. As Moverman sees it, casualties come in all forms, and touch more people than most of us can recognize. [The Messenger] is a compassionate, sensitive, and empathetic film that is as timeless in its subject as it is optimistic in its narrative.
