Program Note
As he comes to the realization that his days of service may be coming to an end, Dr. Yves Rainville starts seeking his replacement?someone to come to the once vital mining town of Normetal and serve the community like he did. Dr. Jeanne Dion answers the call. Ostensibly seeking a more personalized medical practice than the one she has in an urban emergency room, Jeanne soon realizes Normetal may be more demanding than she thought. The third film in Bernard Emond’s humanist trilogy after [The Novena] and [Summit Circle] is intensely emotional and carries forward the series’ themes of faith, healing and destiny. As usual, Emond dispenses with cluttered compositions in favor or elegant, understated visuals that allow the performances of Jacques Godin and Elise Guilbault to shine. [The Legacy] is a plaintive plea for human interaction?with each other and our environments. Without damning progress or urban life, Emond quietly asks that we find a way to recapture that small town ethic of the past?not because it is inherently superior but because it is inherently more human.
